THE REMIX THEORY - LEV MANOVICH (RELATION TO BOTH DISSERTATION AND CURRENT INTERACTIVE PROJECT)

Whilst researching the "Myth Of Interactivity" in the "The Language of New Media" by Lev Manovich, I stumbled across this article discussing the apparant "remix culture" we live in today.

This article discusses the effect of post-modern culture and explains how many of our cultural and lifestyle arenas (e.g. music, fashion, design, art, web applications, user created media) are governed by fusions, collages, or mash-ups.

I feel this relates to my dissertation following on from my research into the postmodern era and its effect on soceity / media.

As a DJ / Producer I have experimented with remixing using various music programs such as Reason and Fruity Loops. I have also incorporated my music into previous design-based projects during the FdA multimedia course.
Here is a link to one of my remixes using samples from the classic track by Michael Jackson - They Don't Really care about us (created in reason 4 / fruity loops / audacity):

In relation to this current interactive design project I have thought about creating an interactive piece using music however I feel my current route (interactive gym - immersive interaction) gives me more opportunity to be creative using the research and material I have gathered so far.

This article is useful for anyone looking at music for the current projects!

great article - the remix culture is something i've often thought about, as all aspects of multimedia are remixed in some way or another.
As for what comes after it - i don't think that will happen for a very long time, newer technology/ software/ media platforms etc will continue to remix themselves and the past for ever.

There are no new ideas.
Theres just the remix.

I totally agree, modern technologies (i.e. remixed technology) tends to have a sense of nostalgia, we like to use technology that is familiar to us, something we can relate too. Backing up your point, theres just the remix...

Does this mean we cannot be original, unique, different!?
