SOME IDEAS / THOUGHTS

In relation to the previous post (and text) on System Theory I considered the work of Marcus Harvey, specifically The Myra Hindley piece:

"Marcus Harvey is known for his tabloid-provoking painting of Myra Hindley created from the handprints of children that was shown in the Sensation exhibit at the Royal Academy of Art in 1997. Following a string of attacks by vandals, the painting had to be removed."

This piece was made from the handprints of children which makes it a disturbing / shock art piece because Myra Hindley (the woman portrayed) was arrested for the serial killing of many young children.

I later found out that the handprints werent actually put on by real children, rather cutouts of handprints (with paint on them) were placed onto the canvas.

This makes the piece interactive in a very different way, mainly because of the concept behind how it was assumed to be made (actual childrens handprints).

In a way this piece is created from the components that the general public remember Myra Hindely by - Children.

When i saw this piece in the Saatchi Gallery a few years back it made me consider that this piece contained the DNA of every child she encountered, and to summarise:

"The Medium is the Message"
